Smart devices: Convenience meets caution
From smartphones and watches to connected appliances, thermostats and cameras, smart devices are becoming part of everyday life. These tools can keep us connected to our loved ones and make our homes more comfortable and efficient. But like any technology that collects data or stays connected to the internet, smart devices come with potential safety and privacy concerns.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when bringing smart devices into your home.
Smart devices are always “on”
Even when you’re not actively using them, most smart devices continue to listen, communicate, update or collect data. That constant connection can create vulnerabilities if a device isn’t set up or maintained properly.
How to stay safe:
- Review and adjust privacy settings so devices only collect what you’re comfortable sharing.
- Mute microphones or turn off devices when not in use.
- Keep devices unplugged when taking extended trips away from home.
“Set it and forget it” can lead to risks
It’s easy to install a smart device, enjoy the convenience and never think about it again. But just like any technology, smart devices need occasional check-ins to stay secure.
How to stay safe:
- Install software updates as soon as they’re available.
- Replace older devices that no longer receive updates.
- Periodically review which apps and services have access to your devices.
Smart devices often share data by default
Many smart home products collect audio, video or usage information and may share it with third parties for advertising or analytics.
How to stay safe:
- Read privacy policies before installing a new device.
- Opt out of data sharing whenever possible.
- Disable features you don’t use — such as voice assistants, motion recording or cloud storage.
Your home network matters
Smart devices rely on your Wi-Fi network to function. If that network is weak, unsecured or outdated, it can open the door to unwanted access.
How to stay safe:
- Use strong, unique passwords for your Wi-Fi and your device accounts.
- Update your router software regularly.
- Create a separate Wi-Fi network just for smart devices, when possible.
